Taxonomy Zinnia elegans was first published as a plate in 1792 Icon. Pl. Rar. 3: t. 589, there is a reference to Collect. Vol. 5 on the plate, which is Collectanea 5: 152 which was not published until 1797. Two records (Caribbean and African datasets) have recorded the volume as 3 and the date as 1791. There is currently (2008) a proposal to conserve this name over Zinnia violacea which will go before the IBC in 2011. Zinnia elegans L. from the Myanmar Checklist appears to be an error. [details]
